Research Interests:
Professor McCollum's research is in arterial and venous disease. He leads a research team of some 40 lecturers, fellows, scientists and technicians, and his collaborations are with various disciplines including particularly epidemiology, neuro-imaging, mental health and stroke medicine. Special research interests include the following:
Arterial and venous thrombosis
Stroke and cerebral perfusion
Carotid and extracranial artery
Paradoxical embolism
Blood transfusion therapy

Cerebral emboli and dementia
Ischaemia-reperfusion injury
Venous disease
Wound healing and leg ulceration

A research team was assembled to investigate the role of cerebral emboli in the causation of both Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia.
Publications: Professor McCollum is regularly invited to give Plenary lectures at both national and international meetings on vascular surgery, arterial and venous disease. He is the senior author on over 200 research publications, chapters in textbooks and various articles and reviews.
Medico-Legal:
Professor McCollum provides expert reports across the range of arterial and venous surgery. He has experience in representing both the Plaintiff and the Defence in actions relating to medical negligence. His special experience in litigation relating to venous thromboembolism led to his appointment as the lead expert in the multi-party oral contraceptive litigation. He has experience in Court both in medical negligence and personal injury litigation. His team have been able to respond to requests for a large number of reports in a very limited timescale and has acquired the expertise to offer advice to many litigants in a multi-party action. He is familiar with the Woolf reforms and is able to comply with the new rules governing expert medical evidence.
